Cars, bikes, clothes, shoes, hotels and flights carry more than one rate depending on value or type — each page sets out the exact split.
The rate, the split, and the code
Every GST question comes down to three things. All three are answered on one page.
Pick the rate
Choose from the current GST 2.0 slabs: 0%, 5%, 18% or 40%, plus the special 3% rate for precious metals. The old 12% and 28% bands were withdrawn in September 2025.
See the split
An intra-state supply splits into equal CGST and SGST. An inter-state supply shows a single IGST at the same total rate. The calculator switches between them.
Get the HSN code
Every rate page carries the HSN or SAC classification, so your invoice cites the right code and not just the right percentage.
What changed in the 2025 reforms
The September 2025 rationalisation collapsed five slabs into four. Here is where things landed.
| Slab | Applies to | Notable moves |
|---|---|---|
| Nil | Fresh produce, printed books, individual life and health insurance, UHT milk, pre-packaged paneer, Indian breads | Individual insurance premiums became exempt in Sept 2025 |
| 3% | Gold, silver and jewellery value | Unchanged; making charges are taxed separately at 5% |
| 5% | Packaged food, medicine, footwear and clothing up to ₹2,500, restaurant food, hotel rooms up to ₹7,500 | Medicine and hotel rooms moved down from 12% |
| 18% | Most goods and services — electronics, cement, steel, tyres, furniture, professional services | Cement, tyres and air conditioners moved down from 28% (tiles were already 18%) |
| 40% | Luxury cars, large motorcycles above 350cc, aerated drinks, tobacco | Replaces the old 28% plus compensation cess structure |
| 12% | Building bricks, fly ash blocks and earthen roofing tiles — and very little else | The 12% slab was withdrawn but retained for these, by Notification 14/2025-CT(R) |

After the September 2025 GST 2.0 reforms there are four main slabs: 0%, 5%, 18% and 40%. The old 12% and 28% slabs were withdrawn, with most items in them moving down to 5% and 18% respectively, though a few such as mattresses and commercial construction moved up to 18%. A special 3% rate continues for gold, silver and jewellery, and 12% survives for building bricks and earthen roofing tiles.
For an intra-state supply, where the buyer and the seller are in the same state, the total GST is split equally between CGST and SGST. An 18% rate becomes 9% CGST plus 9% SGST. For an inter-state supply a single IGST applies at the full rate.
Divide the GST-inclusive total by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. For an 18% rate, divide the total by 1.18 to get the base value, and the difference is the GST. Switch the calculator above to Remove GST to do this automatically.
