NSE and BSE have 16 trading holidays on weekdays in 2026, from Municipal Election day on 15 January to Christmas on 25 December, plus the usual Saturday and Sunday closures. Four listed holidays fall on a weekend this year — Mahashivratri, Id-ul-Fitr, Independence Day and Diwali Laxmi Pujan on Sunday 8 November, which still gets its one-hour Muhurat trading session. The list below is the exchanges’ official one; the banner shows whether the market is open right now and counts down to the next holiday.

Holidays that fall on a Saturday or Sunday are not carried to a weekday: the market is simply closed for the weekend as usual. That is why 2026 has 20 entries but only 16 weekday closures.
Is the share market open today?
The equity market is open on any weekday that is not in the table above, from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm IST. The pre-open session runs 9:00 to 9:08 am, when orders are collected and the opening price is discovered, and the closing session 3:40 to 4:00 pm for trades at the closing price. The box at the top of this page checks today’s date against the list. There are no half-days on the equity segment in 2026; the only special session is Muhurat trading.
Muhurat trading 2026
Diwali Laxmi Pujan is on Sunday 8 November 2026. The exchanges hold the symbolic one-hour Muhurat trading session that evening even though it is a weekend; NSE’s holiday circular says the exact timing will be notified separately, and it is usually announced in the last week of October. Trades made in the session settle normally. The following Tuesday, 10 November (Diwali-Balipratipada), is a full holiday.
Currency and commodity segments
The currency derivatives segment follows the equity list and adds four Maharashtra-specific closures: 19 Feb 2026 (Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti), 19 Mar 2026 (Gudi Padwa), 1 Apr 2026 (Annual Bank Closing), 26 Aug 2026 (Id-E-Milad). Its hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Commodity derivatives on NSE and MCX keep a morning session (9:00 am to 5:00 pm) and an evening session (5:00 pm to 11:30 pm, extended to 11:55 pm while US daylight-saving time is in force); on several equity holidays only the morning session is closed, so check MCX’s own circular before assuming a commodity holiday.
Settlement holidays are a different list
A trading holiday is a day the market is shut. A settlement holiday is a day the clearing corporation does not settle trades — typically bank holidays such as 1 April (annual bank closing) and some state holidays when the exchange itself is open. On a settlement holiday, shares bought the previous day land in your demat account a day later than usual. Brokers show both lists; this page covers trading holidays only.
What the holidays mean for you
- SIP and mutual-fund orders placed on a holiday take the next business day’s NAV. The cut-off is 3:00 pm on trading days for equity funds.
- F&O expiry that falls on a holiday moves to the previous trading day. NSE’s weekly index expiry is on Tuesday, and six 2026 holidays fall on a Tuesday — 3 March, 31 March, 14 April, 20 October, 10 November and 24 November — so those weeks expire on the Monday. BSE’s Thursday expiry is unaffected in 2026.
- Long weekends: 3–5 April (Good Friday), 1–3 May (Maharashtra Day), 2–4 October (Gandhi Jayanti) and 25–27 December (Christmas). Positions held across them carry three days of overnight risk.
- Tax deadlines do not move for market holidays. Advance tax on 15 December and GST returns are due regardless; the tax calendar tracks those.

NSE and BSE publish the following year’s calendar in December. This page will be updated the day the 2027 circular is released; until then, treat any “2027 holiday list” you find as unofficial.
