CA salary in India 2026: what a chartered accountant earns, from articleship to partner
ICAI’s own campus floors, round-by-round offers and the highest package, the articleship stipend, bank and PSU scales for CAs, and what each figure is per month in hand.
A newly qualified chartered accountant in India earns about ₹13 lakh a year through ICAI’s campus placement, the average reported for the 64th programme of April–May 2026, which is roughly ₹1,02,180 a month in hand on the standard salary structure. ICAI’s own floors for that programme ran from ₹7.2 lakh at the smallest centres to ₹20 lakh on the premier day in the metros, and the highest domestic offer in the previous round, December 2025 to January 2026, was ₹32.33 lakh. Before qualifying, the same person was an articled assistant on a stipend of ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 a month. Everything below comes from ICAI’s brochures, FAQs and results pages, with the in-hand figures computed, not quoted.
- Average campus offer: about ₹13 lakh a year (64th ICAI programme, April–May 2026, as reported); about ₹1,02,180 a month in hand
- Campus floors set by ICAI: ₹20 lakh on Day Premier in nine metros, ₹14 / 12 / 11 / 10 lakh on Days 1 to 4, ₹9 lakh at twelve mid-size centres, ₹7.2 lakh at eight smaller ones
- Highest domestic offer: ₹32.33 lakh (63rd programme, Dec 2025–Jan 2026); ₹27.5 lakh reported for the 64th
- Articleship stipend: ₹4,000 then ₹5,000 a month in cities above 20 lakh; a June 2026 draft proposes ₹1,000 more at every band
- Supply: 7,931 new CAs from the May 2026 Final; the 64th programme had more vacancies than candidates
- Government routes: public-sector banks hire CAs at MMGS-II, basic ₹64,820–93,960; central PSUs at the E1 scale, ₹40,000–1,40,000
- CA on a payslip usually means conveyance allowance, not the qualification
How much a CA earns: ICAI’s numbers, not job-portal averages
Most pages on this subject quote one another. The only organisation that sees thousands of real offers to new chartered accountants is ICAI itself, through the campus placement it runs twice a year, and it publishes three kinds of hard numbers: the minimum CTC a recruiter must offer to get an interview slot on a given day, the count of organisations, jobs offered and jobs accepted in each round, and the highest offer. The 64th programme’s brochure, for April–May 2026, sets these floors:
| Interview day or centre | Minimum CTC per candidate | Floor for recruiters taking 15+ candidates per centre |
|---|---|---|
| Day Premier | ₹20 lakh (or USD 50,000 abroad) | ₹17 lakh |
| Day 1 | ₹14 lakh (or USD 40,000) | ₹12 lakh |
| Day 2 | ₹12 lakh (or USD 30,000) | ₹11 lakh |
| Day 3 | ₹11 lakh (or USD 20,000) | ₹10 lakh |
| Day 4 | ₹10 lakh (or USD 15,000) | ₹9 lakh |
| Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Coimbatore, Durgapur, Ernakulam, Indore, Kanpur, Nagpur, Noida, Rajkot, Thane, Visakhapatnam | ₹9 lakh | — |
| Bhopal, Lucknow, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Ratlam, Guwahati, Vadodara | ₹7.2 lakh | — |
Day Premier to Day 4 apply at Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune, where interviews ran from 6 to 18 April 2026; the mid-size and smaller centres interviewed on 19 to 23 May. The ordering matters: the highest-paying recruiters interview first and take the candidates they want, so where a new CA ends up on the ladder depends as much on the day they are shortlisted for as on the offer itself. Recruiters must state the CTC break-up and the minimum take-home in their proforma, and release the offer letter within 15 days of document verification.
| Programme | Organisations | Jobs offered | Jobs accepted | Highest domestic offer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 62nd, August–September 2025 | 157 | 3,795 | 2,931 | — |
| 63rd, December 2025–January 2026 | 145 | 2,480 | 1,892 | ₹32.33 lakh |
| 64th, April–May 2026 | 183 (reported) | 8,911 vacancies for 5,834 candidates (reported) | 2,570 (reported) | ₹27.5 lakh; average ₹13 lakh (reported) |
The 62nd and 63rd rows are from ICAI’s 64th-programme brochure; the 63rd’s highest offer is on ICAI’s Career Counselling Committee page. The 64th row is from press reports of ICAI’s statement after the round, including the Institute’s own correction that the average starting package is ₹12–13 lakh and not the ₹3–5 lakh circulating on social media; ICAI has not published that round’s highlights document at the time of writing, so those three figures are marked as reported.

CA salary per month: what the offers are in hand
Every figure above is cost to company. What reaches the bank is lower: the employer’s PF and gratuity provision come off first, then your PF, professional tax and income tax on the FY 2026-27 slabs. Run through the same assumptions as the salary calculator, basic at 45% of CTC, PF capped at the ₹15,000 wage ceiling, new regime, no variable pay, ICAI’s floors and averages come to this per month:
| Annual CTC | In hand per month | Income tax for the year |
|---|---|---|
| ₹7.2 lakh — campus floor at the smallest centres | ₹54,893 | Nil |
| ₹9 lakh — floor at mid-size centres | ₹69,568 | Nil |
| ₹10 lakh — Day 4 floor, metro centres | ₹77,721 | Nil |
| ₹12 lakh — Day 2 floor, metro centres | ₹94,027 | Nil |
| ₹13 lakh — reported average, 64th programme | ₹1,02,180 | Nil |
| ₹14 lakh — Day 1 floor, metro centres | ₹1,04,215 | ₹73,413 |
| ₹17 lakh — bulk recruiters, Day Premier | ₹1,24,859 | ₹1,19,200 |
| ₹20 lakh — Day Premier floor | ₹1,44,386 | ₹1,78,383 |
| ₹27.5 lakh — reported highest domestic, 64th | ₹1,89,422 | ₹3,71,709 |
| ₹32.33 lakh — highest domestic, 63rd | ₹2,16,515 | ₹5,19,144 |
The jump between the small-centre floor and the metro premier day is the whole story of CA pay: ₹54,893 against ₹1,44,386 a month for the same qualification, with income tax starting only above the rebate line. Offers in the real world carry variable pay and sometimes a joining bonus, which the structure above leaves out; the LPA to in-hand table prices every CTC from 2 to 50 lakh if yours is not listed.
From articleship to partner: the stages
Articled assistant. Two years of mandatory training under a practising CA, on a stipend fixed by Regulation 48 of the Chartered Accountants Regulations. The rates were doubled by the 2023 amendment, effective 23 June 2023, and ICAI’s draft notification of 25 June 2026 proposes another ₹1,000 at every band; as of 9 October 2026 that draft has not been notified as final, so the 2023 figures still apply. Large firms pay above the floor, but the floor is what the regulation guarantees.
| Population of the city or town | Year 1 (current) | Year 2 (current) | Proposed, June 2026 draft (Y1 / Y2) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 lakh and above (Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Ahmedabad…) | ₹4,000 | ₹5,000 | ₹5,000 / ₹6,000 |
| 5 lakh to 20 lakh | ₹3,000 | ₹4,000 | ₹4,000 / ₹5,000 |
| Below 5 lakh | ₹2,000 | ₹3,000 | ₹3,000 / ₹4,000 |
Newly qualified. The campus floors and averages above: roughly ₹7.2 lakh to ₹20 lakh, average about ₹13 lakh, with a handful of offers near ₹30 lakh. Industry roles in finance, internal audit, treasury and tax sit alongside the Big Four and the large Indian firms, which recruit in volume on the bulk-recruiter floors.
One to five years. ICAI runs a separate placement platform for experienced members, Career Ascent, with a July 2026 round for CAs with a year or more of experience, but it does not publish pay statistics for it, and neither does anyone else with a verifiable sample. The honest statement is directional: pay at this stage is set by the function (financial reporting, FP&A and treasury pay more than statutory audit), by the employer (listed companies and Big Four consulting above mid-size firms), and by the city.
Partner, CFO, own practice. At the top there is no salary to quote because the income is a share of profit or a fee book. A partner in a large firm or a CFO of a listed company earns in crores; a sole practitioner in a small town may earn less than a campus fresher. ICAI publishes a minimum recommended scale of fees for professional work, which is the only official anchor for practice income, and it is a floor, not an average.
CA salary in government and public-sector jobs
Two routes have published scales. Public-sector banks recruit chartered accountants directly as managers in middle management grade scale II, MMGS-II, with a basic of ₹64,820 rising to ₹93,960 under the 12th Bipartite Settlement, plus dearness allowance, house rent allowance and the other bank allowances explained on the IBPS PO page; some advertise at scale III. Central public-sector undertakings such as the oil, power and steel companies recruit CAs as finance officers at the E1 executive grade, with the standard IDA pay scale of ₹40,000–1,40,000 and a CTC that lands near the campus average once DA, HRA and perquisites are added. Other CAs enter the Indian Audit and Accounts, Revenue and Civil Services through UPSC, where pay is the 7th CPC matrix rather than anything specific to the qualification.
Why the pay holds up: how few qualify
The salary is a function of scarcity. ICAI’s result for the May 2026 Final, declared on 18 June 2026, shows the filter:
| CA Final, May 2026 | Appeared | Passed | Pass rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Group I | 54,606 | 6,555 | 12.00% |
| Group II | 42,573 | 8,725 | 20.49% |
| Both groups | 23,776 | 3,345 | 14.07% |

About 7,900 candidates qualified from that attempt, and the January 2026 attempt produced roughly the same, so the profession adds on the order of 15,000 members a year against a brochure-stated demand that exceeded the candidates available in the 64th programme. That ratio is what keeps the floors at ₹7.2 lakh and the premier day at ₹20 lakh while most other graduate salaries in India start far lower.
CA versus MBA, and the “₹30 lakh a month” question
Two questions Google shows under this search deserve plain answers. Who earns more, CA or MBA? At entry, a CA from campus at about ₹13 lakh is comparable to an MBA from a good but not top-tier school, and well below the published averages of the leading IIMs; ten years on, the comparison depends entirely on the role, and a CA who moved into finance leadership is paid as a finance leader, not as a CA. The CA route costs a fraction of an MBA and pays a stipend during training rather than charging fees. Can a CA earn ₹30 lakh a month? As an employee, almost never: ₹3.6 crore a year is CFO pay at a large listed company. As a partner in a big firm, or as a practitioner with a large client book, it is possible and not typical. No published data supports a monthly figure for either group.
CA salary in Dubai and abroad
The ICAI brochure sets its own floor for international postings, USD 15,000 to USD 50,000 a year by interview day, and recruiters from the Gulf take part in the metro rounds. Beyond that floor there is no verifiable salary table for Indian CAs in Dubai; what can be said is that UAE pay is free of income tax, which the income tax calculator shows is worth about ₹1,78,383 a year on a ₹20 lakh salary at home, and that the ICAI qualification is recognised by several overseas bodies through mutual recognition agreements, which is what makes those postings possible.
“CA full form in salary”: the two meanings
Thousands of searches a month ask for the full form of CA in a salary context, and the answer depends on where the letters appear. In a job title, CA is chartered accountant, a member of ICAI. On a salary slip, CA is conveyance allowance, the allowance an employer pays for travel between home and work. It is taxable unless it reimburses actual expenses on official duty; the old ₹1,600-a-month exemption for transport allowance was withdrawn when the standard deduction returned in 2018, and survives only for employees with disabilities, at ₹3,200 a month. The salary slip guide walks through every line.
CA की सैलरी कितनी होती है? (CA ki salary kitni hoti hai)

Common questions
About ₹1,02,180 a month in hand for a newly qualified chartered accountant on the reported ₹13 lakh average campus package of April-May 2026, on the standard salary structure and the new tax regime. At ICAI's smallest-centre floor of ₹7.2 lakh it is about ₹54,893, and at the ₹20 lakh premier-day floor about ₹1,44,386.
ICAI's 64th campus placement programme (April-May 2026) set minimum offers of ₹7.2 lakh at the smallest centres, ₹9 lakh at mid-size centres and ₹10 to 20 lakh by interview day in the nine metro centres; the average reported for the round was about ₹13 lakh. Offers outside the campus programme can be lower.
Through campus placement, ₹32.33 lakh a year was the highest domestic offer in the December 2025-January 2026 programme, and ₹27.5 lakh was reported for April-May 2026. Partners of large firms and CFOs earn far more, but those are profit shares and executive packages, not salaries ICAI publishes.
ICAI campus placement mein naye chartered accountant ka ausat package April-May 2026 mein lagbhag ₹13 lakh saalana raha, yaani haath mein karib ₹1,02,180 mahina. Chhote kendron par nyoontam ₹7.2 lakh aur metro mein premier day par ₹20 lakh tha; sabse ooncha gharelu offer ₹32.33 lakh (December 2025-January 2026).
At entry a campus-placed CA at about ₹13 lakh is comparable to an MBA from a good but not top-tier school and below the leading IIMs' published averages. Later, pay follows the role rather than the degree. The CA route costs much less and pays a stipend during articleship instead of charging fees.
Not as an employee in normal circumstances: ₹3.6 crore a year is chief financial officer pay at a large listed company. Equity partners of big firms and practitioners with large client books can reach it, but it is uncommon and no published data supports a monthly figure.
Under Regulation 48 as amended in 2023, ₹4,000 a month in the first year and ₹5,000 in the second in cities with a population of 20 lakh or more, ₹3,000 and ₹4,000 in cities of 5 to 20 lakh, and ₹2,000 and ₹3,000 elsewhere. A draft notification of 25 June 2026 proposes ₹1,000 more at every band; it had not been finalised as of 9 October 2026.
On a salary slip, CA is conveyance allowance, the allowance for travel between home and office, which is taxable except where it reimburses actual official travel. In a job title, CA is chartered accountant, a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.
Public-sector banks recruit chartered accountants at MMGS-II with a basic of ₹64,820 to 93,960 under the 12th Bipartite Settlement, plus DA, HRA and other allowances. Central PSUs recruit at the E1 grade on the ₹40,000-1,40,000 IDA scale. Both come to a CTC near the campus average once allowances are added.
ICAI's May 2026 Final result showed 14.07 percent of candidates attempting both groups passing, 12 percent in Group I and 20.49 percent in Group II; about 7,900 candidates qualified from that attempt. With two attempts a year the profession adds roughly 15,000 members annually.
