RBI assistant salary 2026: the revised ₹29,000 basic, gross and in hand
What changed in the 2026 notification, every allowance RBI pays its assistants, the deductions, and the promotion route to officer grades.
The Reserve Bank revised the assistant scale in its notification of 16 February 2026: the starting basic is now ₹29,000 a month and RBI states initial gross emoluments of about ₹58,514, excluding house rent allowance. After the 10% NPS contribution, professional tax and small subscriptions, in-hand pay is roughly ₹48,000 to ₹52,000 depending on the office and whether HRA is paid. RBI pay is set by the Bank, not by the Bipartite Settlement or the pay commission, and its allowances are the richest at this grade in the public sector.

RBI does not publish a line-by-line break-up in the notification, only the basic and the gross, which is why this table describes the components rather than pricing each one. Medical cover, leave fare concession, newspaper and other reimbursements and subsidised loans sit outside the gross.
Career path
Assistants are promoted to Senior Assistant and Special Assistant by seniority and then can move to Grade A officer through the internal promotion channel after qualifying service and exams, or by sitting RBI Grade B from within. Officer grades follow RBI’s separate scales, with Grade B starting above ₹1 lakh gross.
How to join
RBI Assistant: a bachelor’s degree with 50%, age 20–28, prelims and mains online exams, and a language proficiency test for the state of the office applied to. The 2026 notification announced 650 posts.
