Assistant professor salary 2026: Academic Level 10, in hand, and the UGC ladder
The UGC 7th CPC scales for central and state universities, what AL10 comes to in hand, the career advancement steps, and why state colleges can pay less.
An Assistant Professor in a central university or a state university that has adopted the UGC scales starts at Academic Level 10 with a basic of ₹57,700. With DA at 60%, HRA and the Level 9-and-above transport allowance, gross pay is about ₹1,21,150 a month in an X-class city and the in-hand figure after NPS, CGHS and professional tax about ₹1,11,068; in a Z-class town about ₹93,768. Colleges affiliated to state universities often follow the same matrix but pay DA late, and private colleges are outside it altogether.

Under the 7th CPC transport allowance, Level 10 falls in the ₹7,200 / ₹3,600 band, the largest jump between this post and a Level 6–8 one.
All 7th CPC figures on this page use dearness allowance at 60% of basic, the rate in force from 1 January 2026; the July 2026 revision is normally announced in October and adds arrears. HRA is 30%, 20% or 10% of basic by city class (X: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad). Transport allowance is the 7th CPC slab for the pay level plus DA on it. NPS is the employee’s 10% on basic plus DA; the government adds 14%, which is not shown because it is not pay. Professional tax is state-specific and shown at a typical ₹200.

These are the UGC Career Advancement Scheme stages; universities run the assessments, and a delay in the CAS process is the most common reason two colleagues of equal service draw different pay.
Central, state and private: why the same post pays differently
Central universities, IITs, NITs and IIMs pay the UGC/AICTE 7th CPC scales with central DA on time. State universities adopt the scales by state order, sometimes years later, and may pay a lower DA rate in the interim. Private universities set their own pay, commonly ₹35,000–70,000 gross for an Assistant Professor, without the government allowance structure. Contract and guest faculty are paid per lecture or a consolidated amount, typically ₹25,000–50,000 a month.
How to become an assistant professor
A master’s degree with 55% and UGC NET (or SET, or a PhD which exempts NET), then selection through a university or college interview; engineering colleges use AICTE norms with GATE or a PhD. There is no age limit for direct recruitment.
The 8th Central Pay Commission was constituted by notification on 3 November 2025 under Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, with an 18-month mandate; its report is expected around mid-2027 and revised pay is conventionally effective from 1 January 2026 with arrears. Nothing on this page changes until that report is accepted — the fitment factor and new matrix are not yet decided, whatever a “8th CPC salary” headline claims.
