Loco pilot salary 2026: what an Assistant Loco Pilot takes home, and how it grows

An Assistant Loco Pilot joins Indian Railways at Pay Level 2 with a basic of ₹19,900. With dearness allowance at 60%, house rent allowance and transport allowance, gross pay is about ₹39,970 a month in an X-class city, and after the 10% NPS deduction and professional tax the in-hand figure is about ₹36,586 — before the running allowance, which is paid per kilometre once you are on line duty and typically adds several thousand rupees a month. A Loco Pilot on Mail/Express trains at the top of the ladder is at Level 6 (₹35,400 basic) with a much larger running allowance.

Assistant Loco Pilot salary structure, 2026

Railway employees are not under CGHS — the Railways run their own hospitals and the health scheme deduction is small — so the line is omitted. The transport allowance for Levels 1 and 2 is ₹1,350 in the higher-TPTA cities and ₹900 elsewhere, plus DA on it.

All 7th CPC figures on this page use dearness allowance at 60% of basic, the rate in force from 1 January 2026; the July 2026 revision is normally announced in October and adds arrears. HRA is 30%, 20% or 10% of basic by city class (X: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad). Transport allowance is the 7th CPC slab for the pay level plus DA on it. NPS is the employee’s 10% on basic plus DA; the government adds 14%, which is not shown because it is not pay. Professional tax is state-specific and shown at a typical ₹200.

Running allowance: why two ALPs with the same basic earn differently

Running staff — ALPs, loco pilots, guards — are paid a kilometrage (running) allowance for every 100 km run, at rates fixed by the Railway Board, with a guaranteed minimum for months with little running. It is taxable, but 70% of it is exempt under Section 10(14) up to a monthly cap, which is why loco pilots’ taxable salary is lower than their gross. The amount depends on the division, the link (the roster of trains) and the type of traction; it is the reason online figures for the same post range from the mid-thirties to over ₹60,000 a month. Night duty allowance is paid separately for hours between 10 pm and 6 am.

Promotion path and what each step pays

Promotions are by seniority and departmental tests, and the running allowance rises with the class of train. Annual increment is 3% of basic every 1 July.

How to become a loco pilot

The entry route is the RRB ALP examination: Class 10 plus an ITI certificate in a listed trade (electrician, fitter, mechanic and others) or a diploma or degree in engineering, age 18–30 with relaxations, a computer-based test in two stages, a computer-based aptitude test and a strict medical (A1 vision). There is no direct recruitment to Loco Pilot; everyone starts as ALP. It is a Group C post.

The 8th Central Pay Commission was constituted by notification on 3 November 2025 under Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, with an 18-month mandate; its report is expected around mid-2027 and revised pay is conventionally effective from 1 January 2026 with arrears. Nothing on this page changes until that report is accepted — the fitment factor and new matrix are not yet decided, whatever a “8th CPC salary” headline claims.
