GDS salary 2026: what a Gramin Dak Sevak earns as BPM or ABPM
The TRCA slabs, the dearness allowance that doubles them over time, what is and is not deducted, and how GDS pay differs from a departmental postman’s.
A Gramin Dak Sevak is paid a Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA), not a pay-commission salary. A Branch Postmaster starts at a TRCA of ₹12,000 and an Assistant BPM or Dak Sevak at ₹10,000; dearness allowance is paid on it at the central rate of 60%, so entry pay is about ₹19,200 and ₹16,000 a month respectively. Deductions are minimal — there is no NPS, CGHS or professional tax in most states — so this is close to the in-hand figure. The slabs run to ₹29,380 and ₹24,470 through annual 3% increments.

Since the Kamlesh Chandra Committee reforms of 2018, the level-1 and level-2 slabs that used to depend on workload have been collapsed into these two, with the 5-hour engagement carrying the higher starting point. GDS working 4 hours are engaged on the lower slab.
Increments, DA and what changes the number
- Annual increment of 3% of TRCA on 1 January.
- DA at the central government rate — 60% since January 2026 — on the full TRCA.
- Office maintenance allowance for BPMs who provide the branch office premises, and cycle or boat allowance where applicable.
- Service Discharge Benefit Scheme (SDBS): the department contributes ₹300 a month to an NPS-style account paid out on discharge; there is no pension.
- Ex-gratia gratuity of up to ₹1.5 lakh on discharge after 10 years.
GDS versus postman
A departmental postman is a central government employee at Pay Level 3 (₹21,700 basic) with HRA, transport allowance, NPS and leave rules; a GDS is an extra-departmental agent engaged for part of the day with TRCA and DA only. GDS can move to departmental posts — postman, mail guard, MTS — through limited departmental competitive exams and the postal assistant exam after qualifying service.
How to join
India Post GDS recruits on Class 10 marks with no exam: applicants list circles and posts online, and selection is by merit list, with a residence requirement in the branch office village for BPMs and basic computer knowledge. Age 18–40 with relaxations.
